Special Recognition of Houston County Schools

Posted Date: 04/21/26 (03:30 PM)

Our Special Education team truly shone at the annual spring ALA-CASE Conference in Birmingham. Alabama State Representative Paul Lee attended our Houston County Board Meeting last night to honor these educators and Houston County Schools with a formal proclamation. Signed by Governor Kay Ivey and Secretary of State Wes Allen, the document commends Houston County Schools for its "Impressive Achievements." The proclamation was also supported by State Representatives Paul Lee, Steve Clouse, Jeff Sorrells, and Rick Rehm.

Dr. Misty Freeman: Named the Special Education Director of the Year for Alabama.

Mrs. Hayden Brown (Ashford Middle School): Selected as one of only five Special Education Teachers of the Year in the state.

Mrs. Margaret Valenza (Rehobeth Middle School): Selected as one of only five Special Education Teachers of the Year in the state.

Mrs. Sylvia Ketron (Rehobeth High School): Named one of only five Paraprofessionals of the Year in Alabama.

"These recognitions reflect the dedication, expertise, and heart our team brings to students and families every day. We are incredibly proud!"

Houston County is leading the way in Alabama as the highest-achieving county school system in the state, proving that with hard work and a commitment to every student, we can achieve the extraordinary. Go Houston County!
